"BE PROUD AND WALK WITH YOUR HEAD HELD HIGH BUT NOT SO HIGH THAT IT CAN BE SNAPPED EASILY".

I have been inspired by the photographer Rosie Hardy's take on the seven deadly sins.  This particular piece of photography comes from the sin 'Vanity'. The photographer is well known for her self portraits. These entail impeccable use of lighting and using a slef timer.

In the photograph, I can see the model (Rosie Hardy) standing in a distressed room with a bandage covering her breasts.  She is standing up with her arms behind her back with her head tilted to the right hand side.  By looking more closely at the piece of work I noticed that her neck looks as though it has been snapped which may have been edited by using Photoshop. Also, I realised that her eyes have been made to look unusual and almost gruesome; they look as though her eyes have rolled to the back of her head because you only see the whites of them. The photographer may have cropped the original eyes out like the work of Douglas Gordon. The photographer has used clever use of texture and muted colours. This allows the piece to appear 'fashionable' and allows the viewers eyes to focus on the bright white of the models eyes. This image is both harrowing and pleasing to the eye, which is quite a difficult combination to achieve.

There is no clear light source, therefore i think she has used a daylight softbox to cast diffused light over the body. On top of the image she has used a blending mode such as soft light or multiply to embed a texture to the image. The use of texture appears to be a soft scratched paper. Possibly a layer of gesso on white card which has been slightly scratched.

I think the photographer is trying to say that we shouldn't love ourselves more than we love anybody else because we are all the same and no one is perfect because we were all created in the 'image of God'.  The background is plain but still has effect to it because it is distraught, old-looking and textured, which brings the attention more to the model who is arranged in the centre of the foreground of the photograph.

I have been inspired by this image to create a further series of images representing the sins in a similar style. I am going to do this in order to gain a better understanding of the photographers lighting set up and post production techniques.
