The image below is another image from Giuseppe Mastromatteo. I have included this on my blog because i think it will be interesting to shoot a model with a plain mask and then photoshop her/his face over the top.The mask represents the facade we all put on, for example 'a brave face'. Or appearing to be one way over the true you. I will definetly experiment with this idea on Wednesday.

Some of Giuseppe Mastromatteo's work.

The photographer i have to chosen to write about is called Giusseppe Mastromatteo, he was born on August 6 1970 and has worked as an artist for over a decade. He currently lives and works in Milan and New York where he has his own studio. This piece of his art/photography work comes from the tradition of surrealism. In the picture i can see a woman with her hands over her eyes but by using photoshop Giusseppe Mastromatteo has moved the eyes onto her face to give it a surrealist edge. The image is part of a series based on see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil.

The background of the picture is plain white and the image of the woman is in the foreground. The picture makes me think that we are all being watched even though it may seem as though no one can see us.

It makes me feel intrigued to know why Giuseppe Mastromatteo may have done this and what the story is behind it because there could be many interpretations, because some people may feel that it isn't a nice picture because it's plain and lacks detail but others may think that it's interesting.I think the artist is trying to say that if we do something bad/evil, we're not the only person that knows because there is always someone that is watching.

The colours of the picture are soft and subtle, the woman has pale skin but the lips stand out because they're red and attract a focal point.  The lack of colour and the distinct red lips and eyes give this work a modernist edge . It is typically in the style of eighties fashion photography such as the work of Guy Bourdain.

The image appears as if it is lit from behind the model. This gives the white background a translucent, virgin appearence. The model has also been lit from the front using what appears to be a soft box continuous light source. I think this because the model has no shadow on the hands, and the shadow falls behind the models arm. This gives the image a fresh, modernist feel.It enables the viewer to focus on the facial features. I have been inspired to shoot a model using a similar modernist background and light source. I will use a tripod to shoot the model from the same position. First with her hands over her face, secondlywith her just staring into the camera. I will need to use a sheer make up and strong eyes and lips. I will try to bring the saturation down in photoshop when i composite the images together. The model will need to have a strong facial expression and hold this for some time. I am also inspired to attempt to recreate the images with the ear and mouth in a similar situation to look at the infamous, see, speak and hear no evil.

For my first project i have decided to develop the theme of surrealism and look at artists such as Guiseppe Mastromatteo and Douglas Gordon concentrating on the topic of "see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil" and also the "seven deadly sins" because i think they link together very well. I would like to explore in camera exposures and use digital editing such as photoshop to clone various parts of the human form on to other areas of the body to give more effect. I have been inspired by this image to experiment with monochrome portrait shots using a tripod. I will then merge the two shots together to create a composite by using photoshop.
